Shiloh's Casualties

Throughout Shiloh National Military Park five mass burial sites, like the one pictures above, contain the bodies of close to 2,000 Confederate soldiers who died in the battle of Shiloh.  After their defeat at the battle, the retreating Confederates were not able to bury their dead and the remaining Federal soldiers mad to hastily bury the Confederates in several mass graves in order to cut down on health risks to the surviving soldiers.  A long standing rule forbids any soldier who fought for the Confederacy to be re-buried in a National Cemetery, and so the bodies of these Southern heroes remained interred together eternally.
