Invasion of the Union Camps

At this site stood several Union camps which were overran by the encroaching Confederate forces on April 6th.  While most of the Union soldiers were either killed in their beds or forced to quickly retreat to Pittsburg Landing, U.S. General Prentiss rallied 500 of his men and marched them to the Hornet's Nest, where they and other Northern soldiers would valiantly stand up against the Confederate onslaught.  The upright cannon at this site marks the spot where Col. Everett Peabody was killed trying to rally his Union brigade.
