Smith's Attack

These defensive earthworks were defended by Confederate soldiers on the 15th, when soldiers from the Second Iowa Infantry, commanded by U.S. General Smith, were ordered to fix bayonets on the Confederate line and "take Fort Donelson."  Although Smith's men did manage to break through the enemies' lines and take the ridge here, the attack was called off on the 16th when Generals Grant and Buckner began surrender negotiations.
