River Batteries

These Confederate Artillery Batteries were charged with defending the important Cumberland River, a major transportation and supply route into the Confederate heartland.  One of the first major battles at Fort Donelson occurred on February 14th, when Union ironclads attempted to pound the Confederate guns into submission.  The slow moving ironclads instead became excellent targets for the powerful guns, which inflicted heavy casualties on the Union ships and forced them to retreat.
